Stop pussy footing about obesity

We should not be pussy footing around the serious health risk of obesity. It is not genetically determined to be double the average weight of another person in your same demographic. I am not promoting fat shaming but what I am acknowledging is that we have a serious issue and we are not tackling it the correct way. Simply because we do not want to hurt some peoples feelings.

I’m the 80s our country decided to en large vilify cigarette smoking. And over the last 40 years there has been a massive decrease in their consumption. This has lead to countless lives saved, innumerable more years spent between grandparents and grandkids. As well as a huge burden of cost lifted from our society due to health care costs.

Now I am a fan of complete freedom. If you want to be obese that is your choice. And you have every right to do it. But I also have the right to tell you it’s a terrible life choice and only an issue of habituation.

Obesity leads to more than just increased pant size. You have a much higher chance of dying from cancer, dealing with diabetes, dementia, decreased immune function. The list is on going. If you over eat consistently you are in every way unhealthier. Including mentally. Yes you are much more likely to have depression and anxiety.

Now, I understand there are issues of fat shaming but that is not what I am describing here. Being a female of average height, 5’3” and weighing 150 LBs is not the discussion. The issues is a woman weighing 200 lbs at 5’3”. That is unhealthy life choices.

And like with anything there are societal repercussions to health choices. People that are overweight do have a higher rate of anxiety and depression. Where do you think these issues stem from? People that are overweight increasingly report feeling isolated, unloved and ostracized from group functions. Sadly that makes sense. As social mammals we look for mates that are a good genetic fit for reproduction. And being 300 lbs does not fit into that category.

So yes I do believe that if we all told people that being fat was unhealthy, unattractive and genuinely dangerous. The out come would be happier, healthier people… and all we have to do is not worry about some feelings being hurt in the short run.
